Taxis expensive in Paris??

Can anyone give a rough guide as to the cost of taxis around Paris? e.g. possible cost between Gare du Nord and Latin quarter or the Eiffel Tower or any example you may be able to offer.

I think it cost me about €8 to get from St Germain to the Gard du Nord quite early on a Saturday morning.

There is a minimum fare - can%26#39;t remember how much (maybe €5 - but someone else will know). My taxi from St Michel metro to my hotel came up on the meter less than this minimum - which I of course had to pay.

The actual cost will depend - as it does anywhere - on how much traffic there is.

I presume you%26#39;re wanting to know in order to get from the station to your hotel, and not because you%26#39;re thinking about using taxis to get around Paris to see things? In the latter case the metro, the bus and walking are the way to go.

Hey OzPole! Do I know you??;)

I did a search and this old discussion gives a good indication.

Seems that taxis may be cheaper than people movers, even if you have to get 2! I can%26#39;t remember how much I paid last year, but know that I was pleasantly surprised.

If you do a search there are a few more links about it too!

I%26#39;ve posted this site several times. In the upper left corner, click on %26quot;Estimer le prix et la durée...%26quot;. Even with rudimentary French, you can figure it out.

We took a taxi from Gare du Nord to our Hotel in the 6th near Odeon theatre. For 4 of us with luggage, the fare was only 12 euros which we thought was very reasonable.

Be careful at the station though - make sure you go outside to the %26quot;official%26quot; taxi line. We were approached inside by a very greasy looking man who offered us a taxi. He was about 30 feet in front of the door which leads to the taxis. We politely declined.

Taxis in Paris aren%26#39;t really any more expensive than they are in New York or London.

The average TAXI PARISIAN fare between Gare du Nord and neighborhoods in the upper-5eme-Latin Quarter or upper-6eme-Saint Germain des Prés are likely to run around 12€-to-16€ (w/o surcharges and dependent on the vageries of surface traffic)...from Gare du Nord to the neighborhoods around Eiffel Tower, fares are likely to run around 14-18€.

There are official surcharges that may be added to the amount shown on the taxi meter--1€ per bag (after the 1st) and 2,75€ ea. for a 4th and 5th passenger (there is no longer any surcharge for pick-up at a SNCF train station). No tip for the driver is included within either metered fare or surcharges. So as an example, if the amount shown on the meter is 15,00€ and you are traveling party of four(4) people with four(4) suitcases, with the surcharges added the total fare could run 20,75€ (15€ meter + 5,75€ official surcharge). As also noted, there is a %26#39;..minimum fare..%26#39; for Taxi Parisians of 5,60€ (regardless of the amount indicated on the meter)...and surcharges may also apply to even brief, %26#39;minimum fare%26#39; rides.

The initial %26#39;meter drop%26#39; on a Taxi Parisian is 2,20€ when you enter the taxi....BUT...if you telephone for a radio dispatched taxi pick-up, the meter is supposed to %26#39;..drop..%26#39; at the point where the driver takes the call---NOT when you actually enter the taxi at your pick-up point.

There are also different meter rates (A, B, C) for different times of the day. It is entirly possible to travel precisely the same route during the day (btwn 10.00 till 17.00) and pay one amount and travel precisely the same route in the evening (19.00 till 07.00) and pay a 30% higher fare and make the same trip on a Sunday and pay a higher fare.

Whether all or any of the surcharges or minimum fare are applied is pretty much up to the discretion of the driver....but don%26#39;t bet the ranch on a driver givin%26#39; you a pass.

We paid 11 euros from Gare du Nord to our hotel, two blocks from the Eiffel Tower, and across the street from the Ecole Millitaire, 1pm on a Sunday afternoon in July. We had counted on 15, so it was a nice surprise. Another nice surprise was having a delightful driver who pointed out the sites to us as we drove along. We let him know how happy we were to be in his city/country and he was happy to show it off to us!

I found the taxis for 2 people such a convience and a lot more pleasant than the very, very crowded and hot metro, that I have budgeted them for my 2nd visit May, 2009, and figure about $150 for 7 days.

We had some very informed drivers, and one was so excited to take us thru the tunnel and stopped at the exact spot of Princess Diana%26#39;s Tragic accident.

Our plan from a centrally located hotel to the high priority museums and tourist stops, is to take the taxi, plan on walking thru the parks, and then take the taxis to the next place.

Excellent advise.
