Coat check in Paris restaurants

Hi, we always traveled to Europe when the weather was warm. This time we will be in Paris in the beginning of October. I will be bringing a light coat to wear at night. Does the coat check in a restaurant work the same as in the States? We usually tip 1-2 dollars per coat before leaving when they bring us the coats. Will this be appropriate in Paris also?

I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

It is like that in fancy restaurants. Otherwise you just hang your coat or put it where you can. Most people leave it on their chair.

In all but the fanciest of restaurants, whoever is at the front of the house, often the owner, will ask to take my coat. As previous poster says, you do have the option to say no thank you and hang it on the back of your chair. Tipping is not necessary.
