Rail europe ticket cancellation?

I want to get my rail europe sncf point to point tickets (which i had booked through a travel agent in India) cancelled before the travel date of 28 Sep. The ticket says that it is 80% refundable. However i am being told by the travel agent that I have to get the ticket stamped by the authorities in France and then submit it to the travel agency so that they can apply it for refund. Please suggest me the right procedure or some website link/contact number where I can get the correct information about this as I don%26#39;t think the agency is being transparent with me. Thanks a lot

Back to Paris for a Long Weekend - Crazy?

Well we%26#39;ve been back from our vacation in Paris and Venice for just under a month now, and we%26#39;re horribly depressed. It seems the only cure is to plan another trip.

So we%26#39;re toying with the idea of going back to Paris in May for a long weekend. Flying out Thursday night, arriving Friday morning, and flying back on Monday around noon.

Any opinions from other travelers from North America who have done this? Did you feel like it was a good plan? Or did you feel like you spent too much money and time flying there for such a short period of time?

We plan on doing this trip much more inexpensively than the last one. We will be flying Air Transat and staying in an apartment. I have been looking at some on vrbo and they look great. Can you really get a decent apartment in a good location for 125 euros a night? Is it too good to be true? We%26#39;re looking mostly at the apartments in the 1st arrondissement.

Although the short period of time is not ideal, it seems it would be the only way we could manage the trip. Otherwise we would be looking at waiting for a few years to do another long trip. I%26#39;m feeling too impatient for that! Your thoughts?

|||

I have done this a few times i.e. on Thanksgiving week end. Also went to London for week end once. If it makes you happy and you can swing it, go for it!

Life is uncertain, better eat dessert first!

|||

Der pmmcTO....Well maybe you are crazy, but does it matter? Welcome to the club.

I am going to Paris for a week on 1st October and I have just booked more flights for 6th-9th December because I feel exactly like you! That will be my THIRD trip this year.

I know it%26#39;s easier for me because I live in the UK and flights are cheap, but it is all relative, I am not a wealthy woman so to me it is a lot of money, even though I do it on a budget.

Check out Centreparis for budget apartments. I think the ones in the second are very well situated. I have stayed there near rue Montorguiel and it is good.

centreparis.com/location-paris/…index.html

I just feel that life is too short and going to Paris is my pleasure in life, I just love it!

This time I am going solo, which is an adventure in itself.

Really I could do with a new front door, but that can wait. The memories i have of Paris are much better than an old door.

Many airlines are going down here so cheap flights may be a thing of the past soon. So I am making the most of life. This is something I have learned in my life.... grab your opportunities while you can.

I think you%26#39;ll love it. I%26#39;ve done several %26quot;long weekend%26quot; trips in the last few years timed exactly like yours (one to Dublin, one to London, one to Zurich and one to Paris), and I didn%26#39;t regret any of them.

|||

Ditto the other comments. We%26#39;ve gone to London for a long weekend and are planning our first trip to Paris for Thanksgiving weekend. It is do-able. I say go for it and enjoy!

|||

Thank you all for your input. It%26#39;s nice to know that at least if we are crazy, we%26#39;re in excellent company!

Thank you Denise for the link for the budget apartments. The one you stayed at - was it the Saint Sauveur in Montorgeuil? What is that area like? Is it safe at night? It looks like it might fit the bill quite nicely.

Thanks once again.

|||

We stayed in Aboukir 4 you can read review here under the category %26quot;Paris guest apartments.%26quot;

http://www.ourparisforum.com./index.cgi?board=apartments%26amp;action=display%26amp;thread=2033

I quite fancy the Saint-Savour, Greneta or Tiquetonne apartments for next year. They are just off Montorguiel which is a great market street. I loved this area, central but not too touristy or expensive. Easy transport links,plenty restaurants and shops.

ever since flying 26 hours back from SE Asia in 1997, I dont hesitate to book long weekend deals to Europe.... Deals being the key word! I%26#39;ve paid less to fly RTP to London for than 1 night at the hotel cost.

|||

pmmmcTO - yes you are crazy but it%26#39;s nice to be crazy sometimes. If you can afford it I%26#39;d say go for it. I spent a weekend in Rome once (meant to be guiding my parents around but they had to cancel - already bought my ticket %26amp; booked a B%26amp;B so I went by myself) and it was great - just try to stay on Eastern Standard Time all 3 days - maybe trying to get up %26amp; going to bed earlier for a few days before you go. I%26#39;m visiting Paris for the first time this October and staying in an apartment with Vacation in Paris - was $170US per night. I%26#39;ll post a review on the Forum once I get back.

|||

Hello!

I am in the same boat, travelling a bit farther from Edmonton though this Thanksgiving long weekend. I am leaving Edmonton on Thursday evening, arriving Friday morning, and leaving Tuesday morning.

I do not think that it%26#39;s too much, but it would be up to you. The last time i went to Paris, i was there for 4 days, and it was a great time. Not too long, and not too short.

I%26#39;m of the mindset that I can sleep later, sleep on planes and trains. We are even taking a day trip to London this time!

So take care and enjoy, and create a memorable long weekend, I know i will!

|||

Thanks for the great responses! Denise, I showed the Saint Sauveur apartment to my DH and we both feel that one looks great. So the owner is decent and you had a good experience staying at one of their apartments in the past?

Since we stayed in the 1st the last time, we%26#39;ll try the 2nd this time. Rue Montorgeuil looks fun! I%26#39;ve read from searches on this forum that it%26#39;s a great area but best to avoid Les Halles at nighttime, so duly noted.

My family thinks we%26#39;re a bit wacky going back so soon and for such a short time, but as other posters have noted, you only live once. And I further justify our decision by reminding myself that we rarely go out for dinner or spend on ourselves here at home. So a short jaunt to Paris will make up for it!

Thanks to all for making me feel better about it!

Eurostar update

Here is the latest update on Eurostar services in the aftermath of the fire that occured last Thursday :

The service has resumed on a limited schedule due to single-track operation in the tunnel. For the moment, this limited service is scheduled until Sunday September 21. 12 trains a day will run between Paris and London and 6 trains a day between Brussels and London.

Travellers holding a ticket for a journey until September 21 are advised that they will most probably experience long checking-in times, although Eurostar will strive to honour all tickets. Consequently, travellers are advised to show up at the station 2 hours before departure, and in any case, check-in will be closed in Paris at 8PM, in Brussels at 8.30PM and in London at 6.45PM (all times local).

However, if the holders of such tickets can reschedule their travel plans to a later date or find alternative connections, Eurostar will be %26quot;grateful%26quot; to them to do so. All cancelled tickets will be refunded and exchanges for journeys at dates later than September 21 will be carried out.

Feeder segments on French domestic TGVs through-ticketed with Eurostar (eg Perpignan-London via Lille) will be similarly honoured.

Travellers in France can call free of charge at 0800 130 130 for up-to-date information.

It is esteemed that reparis will last at least for 5 months.

My paris to london ticket is for 21:13 which is after the last time they are showing.

I knew my vacation was going to have a hitch.

|||

%26gt;%26gt; My paris to london ticket is for 21:13 which is after the last time they are showing. %26lt;%26lt;

Remember, until further announcement, this timetable is only confirmed until September 21.

However, if it is still enforced when you travel, what day of the week would that be ? In any case, I recommend that you show up really early - 18:00 at the very last.

|||

Thank you for posting this information.

Do you have any idea when they will release information about travel after 21 September? Colleagues and I are booked Paris to London (morning) on 22 September and return in the evening on 24 September. We can be there early for the Paris-London leg, but not more than an hour before the London-Paris trip.

If we are have tickets for one of the trains whose numbers are listed, is there a risk of getting bumped?

|||

Louie, I would appreciate very much to have early information as to next week%26#39;s timetable, but, although I do work at the SNCF, I don%26#39;t ...

Eurotunnel said that they should be able to open by the end of the week the 2/3rds of the northern tunnel that have not been affected by the fire. This would increase capacity, so near-normal service could be sustained. In any case, as to your return, is it on the last train ?

|||

Good article in the Guardian by Andrew Martin about alternative arrangements:

|||

SuperH,

Thanks for your reply. I figured it was too early to know about next week, but I thought I%26#39;d ask anyway. Our return is on train n° 9050 (originally scheduled for 19.05).

Thanks for keeping us posted!

|||

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;It is esteemed that repairs will last at least for 5 months.%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Any ideas how the schedule will be affected by 25 October? I know it%26#39;s a ways off but there might be a little bit of info. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date, SuperH!

|||

%26gt;%26gt; I know it%26#39;s a ways off but there might be a little bit of info. %26lt;%26lt;

Unfortunately, no ... not even within the SNCF.

|||

I mean, there /are/ guys at Voyageurs France Europe (the %26quot;Mainline and International%26quot; department of the SNCF) who are busy working on the timetables right now, and they must have some information, but it hasn%26#39;t leaked yet.

|||

I received an email from eurostar that they are only offering refunds/exchanges up to Sept 30th at this point. I am sure they are still assessing damage and routes, etc

Camping

I am considering a few nights in Camping du Phare with my partner and 10 yr old daughter and, because of our shoestring budget, we need somewhere cheap (and seem to have found it!). Can anyone give advise on the distance to the beach/town (I have contradicting map refs!) and whether it is walkable, if not is there any transport? Many thanks

|||

Ok, so at the risk of looking mad, I%26#39;m going to answer my own question!! Camping du Phare - perfect location - pretty much in the town itself, facilities were basic - but clean and all we needed. It was the perfect place for us, being on a budget - shame about the weather!

One place I%26#39;d recommend - Val des Cimes - a tree top assault course in St Gatien de Bois, set in beautiful woodland aand only 9km from Honfleur it was enjoyed by all!!

What is your favorite 2 Star hotel on the Right Bank?

I would like to try staying on the Right Bank during our stay in October but I am having the hardest time picking a hotel. I think it is the hardest part of planning a vacation overseas. It really stresses me out. We would like to spend under 150 euros a night. I put up an earlier post and didn%26#39;t have much response hoping this one will bring me a bit more luck. All the hotels I really keep liking are on the Left Bank but I would really like to give the Right Bank a chance this time.

Cheers,

Magic97

|||

Is this for October this year or next year?

Can%26#39;t help with hotels, because we prefer to stay in apartments and - this is cheating because it%26#39;s neither Left or Right Bank - we love the Ile de La Cite/Ile St Louis.

If you%26#39;re staying more than 7 days, www.parisaddress.com has apartments on the Ile St Louis for less than €150 per night. CHANOI16 (€933 for the week) is even available for all but the first week of October 2008.

Other agencies also do apartment rentals for shorter periods.

|||

I saw your other post too, not trying to ignore you,, but can%26#39;t provide much help. I am not a fan of the right bank. Stayed in the first once, and it was ok.,, but out of your price range.

I have stayed with relatives in the 8th, and thats ok too, um, free always is.. LOL

What is it about the right bank that interests you in particular? Where have you stayed before?

If all the hotels you %26quot; keep liking%26quot; are on the left bank, why not just stay on the left bank?

PS. Good point by above poster, at this point you are running out of choices of nice hotels in your price range, October can be a busy month in Paris, trade and fashion shows.

|||

This trip was unplanned and yes it is this year. We liked the Right bank when we were there last Oct all the little side streets and it was less crowded. We just thought it would be fun to stay on the other bank this time around. I guess I will just stay on the Left there are alot of choices on that side in our price range.

Cheers,

Magic97

|||

I%26#39;m a Left Bank girl at heart, but a friend of mine always stays at the Hotel Paris France, (yes, that is the name) a 2 star hotel which he says is clean, neat and convenient.

www.paris-france-hotel.com

I stayed once at the Hotel Langlois in the 9th. Huge rooms for Paris. One block from a Metro stop and a couple of blocks from the Opera. I%26#39;d stay there again with no hesitation.

www.hotel-langlois.com

|||

At the Hotel Vivienne, 40 rue Vivienne in the 2nd, we are given a very large [and quiet] back corner room with a nice bath for €94. The staff is very helpful, and there are two computers for use by guests, one with a non-french keyboard. Close to the Grand Boulevards Metro, with two good lines; three blocks from the Bourse Metro. Plus several bus lines. They serve an excellent breakfast too.

Hi;

Consider the Hotel Pratic in the Marais

http://www.paris-hotel-pratic.com/

On the Marche St Catherine, great location, newly renovated(last year) St Paul metro within 100 meters...

127 euros for a double...

|||

Try Hotel Chopin. Charming,well situated and less than 100 euros.

|||

Thank you all for the suggestions for the Right Bank I will be looking these up asap.

Cheers,

Magic97

|||

So far the winner is Hotel Paris France looks perfect great size rooms and the location and prices are excellent. Thank you all so much!!

Bus St Malo to Mon St Michel & Dinard

Hi,

Has anyone done this via public transport? If so any advice re costs time and where to get bus from would be great.

Thanks

|||

Bus from St Vincent, by the walls in St Malo, to Pontorson (about an hour) then change at the station for the bus to Mont St Michel. The whole trip took about 2 hours with waiting time, and cost about 5 euro single, I think. Most days there is only one coach from St Malo, but they will give you the information and times in the kiosk. Coming back, we had to wait nearly an hour at Pontorson, but there is a great hotel bar opposite ! Liz

|||

www.tibus.fr/horaires_ligne/index.asp…

it has all bus routes for Brittany area - make sure you choose the right time table for the season.

I am doing this area this weekend for 4 days, and relying on the buses.

You can also contact the company who get back to you very promptly if you are unsure about which bus to catch. They are very nice and attach the correct timetable for you.

Hope this helps

Montparnasse at night, Canal St Martin, Nissim Camondo

Just a quick note!!

I just returned today from 5 nights in Paris (my 6th visit) and am already depressed but on a better note out of many great recommendations I just want to say that our real high lights were

3. Musee Nissim Camondo went there to get museum pass and found it to be a real gem with great English audio guide.

2. Tour Montparnaasse. View at night was awesome and an added bonus seeing the Eiffel tower in blue (still 5 days left i here) I recommend this trip to even 1st time visitors no queues and super fast lift (34 seconds)

1. Canal St Martin (Canauxrama canal Cruise). This is a must on a sunny day the canal is littered with people on the bridges and banks chilling eating etc all the way up to the amazing park de la villette which was jumping with locals with their children (sunday) and you get to see the geode! This was the jewel in the crown of a great 6 days!!

Planning next trip already :D

|||

I enjoyed the canal cruise, too, but on our last trip we took the metro up to the area where the cruise begins and spent the late morning and early afternoon just walking back to the 6th along the canal. It was nice to walk over rather than sail underneath, some of those bridges.

Pjk

|||

Musee Nissim de Camondo and Jacquemart Andre are both great - lots of history and great art collection (better at Jacuemart Andre IMO with the Italians).

Tour Montparnasse has great views and so has bar at Concorde Lafayette at Porte Maillot.

Canal Saint Martin... I like it from the ground. Did not care for cruise.

So many people and so many different opinions!

Get working on your 7th visit!

Coat check in Paris restaurants

Hi, we always traveled to Europe when the weather was warm. This time we will be in Paris in the beginning of October. I will be bringing a light coat to wear at night. Does the coat check in a restaurant work the same as in the States? We usually tip 1-2 dollars per coat before leaving when they bring us the coats. Will this be appropriate in Paris also?

I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

|||

It is like that in fancy restaurants. Otherwise you just hang your coat or put it where you can. Most people leave it on their chair.

|||

la Photograph, Thank you for your help

|||

In all but the fanciest of restaurants, whoever is at the front of the house, often the owner, will ask to take my coat. As previous poster says, you do have the option to say no thank you and hang it on the back of your chair. Tipping is not necessary.

Center of Paris hotel for £80

Hello. I am going to Disney Lane Paris just after christmas, but are looking at staying in the center of Paris the night before we go. I wondered if anyone could recomend a hotel that fulfils the following.

- Must be in center - due to us only being there for one night before DLP, we want to see all the usual tourist things, ADT, Tower, etc etc, so one in the middle would make this easier

- Would really just like to spend around £80 for the night for the hotel.

- The room is for 2 adults and a 2 year old

Thanks for any help. I have been looking all over the net for months, but there are that many different hotels, i dont have a clue where to start.

Thanks

I recently stayed in the Hotel du Marais, 2bis rue Commines in 3rd and thought it clean, good value and very well located (it%26#39;s in the quieter part of the Marais but only a few minutes walk from the livelier part). Just checked and their rates are exactly £80.

|||

Hotel Eugenie,, in the 6th bordering the 5th, about 1/2 block from St Michel RER and metro station. Five minutes to Notre Dame,even with a child, and many places to eat in area.

I haven%26#39;t stayed there yet, but I did go there and ask to be shown rooms as I was contemplating using them. Most hotels will show you rooms if you ask.

We saw two rooms, a twin and a triple. Both were clean and looked fine to us, had A/C and mini fridges( handy to keep little ones juice or snacks in)

Rates I was quoated last year for July was 120 euros for a twin, when I inquired in March, by May price had gone up to 140 euros. Book ahead.

day trips from disneyland paris to Paris

Hi,

Can any one advise me on day tours from disneyland paris to central Paris, taking in the main attractions.Either full or half day and are they expensive.

Many thanks.

|||

You really don%26#39;t need any sort of %26#39;..tour..%26#39;. Any decent Paris guidebook, a bit of personal research, a STREETWISE PARIS compact folding street map and a one-calendar-day MOBILIS Zone 1-5 transportation pass is all you need. Pick your own TOP TEN (or twenty) and enjoy the day.

The MOBILIS Zone 1-5 pass (12,90€) covers your round-trip RER %26#39;A-4%26#39; ligne train fare between MARNE LA VALLÉE-CHESSY-DLP station and several stations within Paris...as well as provides you with convenient %26#39;..hop-on/hop-off..%26#39; access to all modes of public transportation in Paris--RER, Metro, Bus, Tram, Funicular. The round-trip RER fare between DLP and PARIS is 12,90€ by itself....so the MOBILIS is a good deal.

|||

Hi,

This trip is for my mother and son, they would loose themselves in a hotel room, ha.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Really confused and need guidance...

hi everyone, my partner and i land at the Toulon-Hyeres airport on Saturday afternoon.

we have free time until 12pm on monday when i need to report to a conference in Lalonde les Maures.

we rented a car from hertz and are now stuck - we don%26#39;t know the area that well and of course thought about spending the extra time in St. Tropez but we are really open to recommendations. also, seems also like a lot of the places are fully booked in St. Tropez.

the big thing for us is when we get to the hotel we want to be able to relax, unwind, have dinner in a peaceful and beautiful place (we are picky so a 4 star would be important to us) then spend sunday sightseeing.

i know a lot of places are closed on sundays so any suggestions on helping us with organizing our schedule, we are really lost and can%26#39;t make a decision. thanks so much!

You could stay in St Remy and drive to l%26#39;Isle sur la Sorgue on the Sunday to see the fab antiques market there. It%26#39;s way beyond my pocket so I%26#39;ve never stayed there but Chatea des Alpilles is said to be the best in the area. chateaudesalpilles.com

And eat at this restaurant, again beyond my means but it has a couple of michelin stars

www.franceweb.org/lamaisonjaune/

You won%26#39;t be too close to the sea in St Remy but the area is beautiful, loads to do and see, a great town for foodies, and %26#39;real%26#39; Provence within a short drive.

Budget hotel with easy access to centre - help please!

I%26#39;m travelling to Paris for 3 days and nights with my boyfriend for my birthday and we are looking for budget accomodation which is within easy reach of Paris%26#39; main attractions (either by foot or train). We are also keen to find somewhere with a few restaurants nearby (within walking distance) to explore in the evenings.

So far I%26#39;ve been looking at Hotel Wilson as my first choice, with a room cost of £150 for the three nights.

Any help or advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated :) thanks in advance!

|||

I was just in Paris for the first time a few weeks ago. We stayed at Hotel Paris Rivoli in Marais. Great location, just a block or so from the metro, plenty around, and about a 15 minute to Notre Dame. Not sure if the price will be low enough for you, but it is a cute place, friendly staff, great location.

Paris what to see in only 6 hours!!

hi,

Since i have only 6 hours (from 15,00-21,00 on next Sunday),please advise what is the best quick itinerary.We will be arriving by train from Disneyland.

I definetely want a seine river cruise and a visit to Eiffel Tower.Also a visit to Arc de triomph and a stroll around Sans elysee and rue Cler for dinner.

Can I do all that in 6 hours?

many thanks in advance!!

|||

It will be tight but you could start at the Arc de Triomphe (Metro Charles de Gaulle metro) walk down champs Elysees as far as metro Franklin D Roosevelt then jump on metro down to Lourve-Rivoli Stop. Short walk to Pont neuf and catch Seine Cruise %26quot;vedetees Pont Neuf%26quot;

http://www.vedettesdupontneuf.com/departs.htm

Get ticket on-line or print discount voucher.

1 hour cruise (every half hour )

Go back to Lourve- Rivoli Metro and head back to Franklin D Roosevelt and change for Trocadero there you will have best view of Eiffel tower and you can walk towards it. Alothough you will not have time to go up. (even taking the stairs)

Rue Cler is nearish Eiffel tower but im sure you could do something else for dinner theres plenty of other options, and your tight for time!!

|||

Thank you for your kind reply!

I will follow your advise.

Just one question is this river cruise better than the other one called Bateaux Parisiens?

Since Bateaux Parisiens departs near Eiffel Tower will it save more time?

any suggestions for a reasonably priced resteurant near Eiffel Tower?

Thanks again

Take care!!

|||

Ive only ever used the botabus which also stops a t he tower but im not sure of duration, but it maybe be a better option for you.

|||

There are a couple of boat cruise companies that start from right under the Eifel Tower. These are the best, i feel, because it starts and ends at the tower. These cruises cost between 9-11 euros for a simple cruise (non lunch/dinner)

I dont think you may have enough time to get up on the tower because the lines to buy the ticket are pretty long. check out the lines at wikimapia or google earth

|||

The Batobus is a hop on hop off boat that goes to one end of the Seine turns around - back and forth. It stops at eight sightseeing destinations. One being the Eiffel. Review their web site for specifics. It also stops at the Arc.

|||

What to do with your luggage duing your touring about ?? After touring about the city, will you be departing from Paris to CDG ??...If from CDG, what is your planned mode of airport transfer ??...Taxi?..Les Cars Air France Coach??...RER %26#39;B%26#39; ligne??...or from a SNCF/TGV train station ??...How many in your traveling party(we)??...How much luggage??...any physical mobility issues??

|||

I would seriously consider skipping the Seine cruise, if you only have 6 hours. See a few sights, relax at a Cafe with a glass of wine and people watch, just enjoy being in the city!

|||

I have to respectfully agree with the last post - I think that you%26#39;d be better off skipping the boat tour. I have done a boat tour before and the whole time all I could think as we were passing by the beautiful sights was: I wish I could stop and take a picture next to that! Since you only have 6 hours, my opinion is that you%26#39;d be wiser to see the city on foot or by bus (#69, for example, will take from the Eiffel Tower, past the Tuileries and the Louvre - along the Seine - and all the way to the Bastille. By walking or busing you will still get a unique view of the city, plus you can actually experience the pulse of the city and admire the beautiful sights and architecture up close.

Perhaps you might want to think about seeing the city from above?? I couldn%26#39;t tell from your post if you%26#39;re planning on climbing both the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. The Eiffel Tower usually has ridiculously long lines, but the Arc de Triomphe has great views and isn%26#39;t too much of a hike up.

|||

Hi,

It%26#39;ll take you about one hour to go to Paris from Disneyland.

You should forget the rue Cler, which is not very interesting for dinner. If you consider coming back in Paris, it%26#39;s much better going there before noon, while shops and market are busy.

l%26#39;Arc de Triomphe is much easyer than the Tour Eiffel and from the roof, you%26#39;ll see all the Champs-Elysées, la Concorde, les Tuileries and much more.

It%26#39;s not too hight so you recognized the nice buildings. Stairway only !

Don%26#39;t walk thru the Champs-Elysées, it%26#39;s over crowded and quite long. More than 1 km.

If you want a typical street like the rue Cler, you should go to the rue Poncelet 5 mn away from l%26#39;Arc de Triomphe : av. de Wagram, avenue Niel, after the Fnac Corner (very Nice building), first street on your right.

Cruising the Seine is very long. Don%26#39;t forget Montmartre, it%26#39;s beautiful and a good spot to see the city like in Ratatouille movie...

Richard (I%26#39;m Parisien)

Nota : sorry for the approximate english...

|||

rue Cler for dinner.

Forget this on a Sunday especially.

In 6 hours you have time to go to Seine and take a cruise or a walk.

Look at Pont des Arts. Louvre from outside and have a drink at a cafe.

Next week end is journees du patrimoine. Will be busy in town!

Marriage proposal

I figured this could be a fun question to ask. Where would you propose in Paris?

|||

Do a search as this question has been asked many times before with as many different answers as posters. The whole idea of %26quot;romantic%26quot; is not the same for everyone. Avoid crowded places like Eiffel Tower, Montmartre etc. Pick a place and make it your own.

|||

I would want to be proposed to in the gardens at Versailles...maybe even the Hameau. It is sooo beautiful there!

|||

Are you going to pop the question, if you are traveling so far it may be worth asking some where well known, inside Sacra Coeur is stunningly beautiful and the views are incredible.

Two city vacation

we will be staying at Le Club Mougins the end of October for 1 week, and then at the Palazzo Catalani in Viterbo, Italy for a week. We are debating whether to rent a car for those two weeks. We plan on taking the trains to Paris, Florence, Venice and Rome, but also wanted to see the countryside. We had originally planned to drive from Mougins down to Viterbo, but are wondering about the tolls. Also, does anyone know if the 2 resorts have free parking in the event we do rent a car? Any other information would be most helpful.

|||

You can check out driving distances and tolls at mappy.com and viamichelin.com, which also will give you estimates of driving time.

I looked at Le Club Mougins a few months ago and think the web site indicated free parking.

You might want to rent a car for your time in southern France; it would make getting to Mougins easier than by train to Cannes and then bus. You would NOT want to take the same car into Italy, as you would have a whopping one-way charge to pay. You can take the train from Cannes to Italy and pick up another car when you get there íf that%26#39;s what you decide to do.

|||

We stayed at Le Club mougins a few years ago. It was beautiful!! The small town of Mougin has the best food I%26#39;ve ever had and it%26#39;s great place to go for dinner. The resort did have free parking and because the resort is nestled about 5 miles ontop of a hill overlooking Cannes it%26#39;s best to have a car. Defintely try to go to Eze while your there (It%26#39;s between Nice and Monocco)..it has the most gorgeous view i%26#39;ve ever seen at the top and it%26#39;s such a cute town.

|||

Sorry to spot your post so late, your holiday probably seems a distant memory!? But I have just booked for a week at Le Club Mougins and wondered what it was like, I%26#39;ve booked via Sunterra and do find their resorts very hit and miss, unfortunately. So would be nice to know what this one is like before travelling and manage the expectations !

|||

I notice this post is dated Jun 2006. We are 2 Australians staying in Paris at the moment and are considering booking a week at le club Mougins. Has anyone stayed there more recently than 2006. We are desperate to find out about the standard of this resort as we need to book it or something else quite soon

|||

We are going to Le Club Mougins in November 2008 for 7 days. I%26#39;m wondering - what is the cheapest way to get from Nice Airport to Club Mougins? A Taxi is 80 Euro; I can%26#39;t seem to find any info on buses or trains; perhaps nothing goes into Mougins? We have never rented a car in Europe and are somewhat hesitant (we don%26#39;t speak any French). Is renting a car a crazy and/or scary experience and would it be cheaper overall than trying to take taxis, buses and trains?

4 Hours in Paris

Hi

Myself, my Wife and infant daughter are leaving the Gare De Lyon at 13.40pm. If we have our bags dropped in the left luggage by 9am. How do you maximise 4 hours in Paris???

Any ideas inc itineries

Decis

|||

The famous Le Train Bleu restaurant is at the Gare de Lyon, you could have a very extended lunch in fab surroundings!!

www.le-train-bleu.com/uk/navigation.htm

I have the feeling that you can get a Paris River Cruise from the Quai D%26#39;Austerlitz which is across the river from the Gare De Lyon (but I must admit I%26#39;m not 100% certain of this, so am doing a websearch to find out for certain) Other posters may know this for sure though.

I%26#39;d suggest borrowing a Rough Guide, or Lonely Planet guide from your local library, as they tend to discuss cities by %26#39;area%26#39; and may well have suggestions for places to visit close to the Gare de Lyon.

|||

This map I found on the Frommer%26#39;s site, gives you a bit of an idea of what is close-ish to Gare de Lyon:

frommers.com/images/destinations/maps/jpg-20…

The Paris Tourism website also has an interactive map, which might give you some ideas:

http://www.paris-tourism.com/map/index.html

I have found out that the Bato bus stops at the Jardin des Plantes, which is actually on the Quai St Bernard, opposite bank of the Seine to Gare de Lyon, but very close:

…parisinfo.com/paris-map/…boats_the-batobus

another option would be to take a ride on the No. 20 bus from Gare De Lyon to Gare St Lazare and back, could be quite scenic, and probably cheaper than the HoHo bus:

…parisinfo.com/paris-map/…

|||

Afer taking No. 20 Bus, you could take the No. 24 bus returning from Gare St Lazare to the Jardin des Plantes, and get a different view of Paris on your way back!

|||

Thank you EW for all your kind research, we know it takes up hours of your precious time.

IF we could be a*sed ourselves, we would do our own donkey work, but we have no gumption!

You are marvelous, fabulous, gorgeous, a total star and we will NEVER be able to repay your kindness,

With lots of love from Decis and family XXX

|||

On one of our days in Paris last week we walked from the Sacre Ceour to Notre Dame passing Gare De Lyon. To reach GDL it took hardly any time so it must be fairly near. I would suggest a taxi to the Sacre Ceour and spending a lovely couple of hours in the Montmarte area - blissful!

Le Club Mougins

We are coming from Australia and travelling in Europe. If anyone has stayed at Le Club Mougins recently we would appreciate reading your comments about this resort.

Thanks

|||

We are going in July to the same place. I noted there is no air conditioning mentioned. Do you think it will be tolerable???

|||

We had a HORRIBLE stay at Club Mougins. We had a vacation getaway and paid for a room filled with insects. I have just had a response from Diamond Resorts to a detailed letter about our stay. They said we opened up windows and had flying ants. Ha Ha. We came home from dinner the first night and found a major infestation of bugs pouring out of the walls in the kitchen, dining area, and living room. The bugs were numerous and were of every size. We complained late at night and we shut the doors after my husband sprayed so much bug spray that the odor was horrible. The next day one man came and sprayed. The management%26#39;s attitude reflected that this unit and others have had bug problems before. One day without bugs. THe next day again mor bugs and they were all over the kitchen area, especially the refrigerator. Again, we complained and so much time was spent on this. We asked for a different room and they had none. People who stayed here before said that these units have had bugs problems. Also, the couch was smelly, old...what we call ratty. Ditto for the rug in the bedroom. Again, I addressed this in a letter to Diamond Resorts and they blame housekeeping. NO WAY. The couch and rug are OLD and SMELLY. Again, we spoke to people have newly renovated units that had new couches, rugs, etc. We complained numerous time to management and we got the proverbial shrug.... and there is nothing we can do. Big apologies do not count on a vacation. We decided to leave early. SO GOOD LUCK%26gt; Sincerely, Valerie Merrill. P.S%26gt; BY the way, check out the huge gas prices and tolls on the roads. Any more info about France we can send. We Still love the place and its people, but this place is the pits.

|||

Can you give us any tips on how to get around the area by using local buses or trains? We will arrive at Nice Airport and are staying at Club Mougins; can%26#39;t seem to find any info on transportation to Mougins except for a taxi. A taxi is 80 Euro and we don%26#39;t want to pay that.

Roscoff to...?

As a stranger to France I%26#39;d like to know what the region from St Brieuc to St Nazaire has to offer in late September...Is this region called Cotes Finistere?

Landing at Roscoff we would like to explore long quiet sandy beaches %26amp; interesting small towns %26amp; villages. Should we turn East to St Brieuc or West %26amp; cut down to the Southern side of this region?

We would really appreciate comments from folks who are familiar with this area, who also may have visited/lived in this area through September/October.

I fear that being adjacent to the Bay of Biscay may indicate stormy rain?

Advice on the Plymouth - Roscoff ferry is also most welcome.

Thanks in anticipation.

Paris vacation apartment to rent

I am looking into renting an apartment in Paris for 4 or 5 nights in October rather than staying at a hotel. Can anyone recommend a nice clean apartment that they know of that can sleep 2 people but with 2 beds? Does anyone know of a reputable web site I can look at? This will be our 1st isit to Paris so would like to be in a central area. Thanks very much for the help.

Leslie

|||

Look at VRBO.com, homeaway, parispiedaterre.com, alacarteparis.com.

I have rented from VRBO, but not in Paris. The others are sites I have been %26quot;talking%26quot; with for a rental this December. I googled apartment rental in paris and also put in the same as a search term on this website. Reviews are also available at Slow Traveler.

|||

We rented from Paris pied a terre and were very happy with our rental. We rented the Passy apartment in the 16th and will rent from them again.

|||

Leslie, just above your original post there is a seach in box. Enter apartmment rentals, and you can read 50+pages of recommendations

|||

Try

http://www.parisperfect.com/

|||

Leslie - as noted above, there are many, many web sites for apartments, and if you do a search on this forum you will find lots of lists of apartment agencies. One thing - you need to get this pinned down as quickly as possible because October is a very popular time to be in Paris (also, typcially there are some big events that month) and things can book up quickly. Have fun with your planning, and do check back to ask opinions about apartments and/or locations you are considering. (It%26#39;s hard to recommend a specific apartment or site, because you didn%26#39;t mention your price range - try Vacation in Paris www.vacationinparis.com for an agency that a lot of people have used with good success.

|||

vacationinparis.com is great. i%26#39;ve rented the tower view apt (#42) from them in the 2d arr. two beds, perfect for two people. and you pay in american $$.

|||

Thanks very much everyone. I have searched the web and found countless sites, hence the question. My price range would probably be about 140 euros a night. I%26#39;ve read that you have to give a rather large deposit for apartments which makes me a bit nervous as you just don%26#39;t know what to expect when you get there! I thought an apartment might be a fun way to experience Paris as my husband is a chef and you can just imagine the food we could cook up! I%26#39;ll look into the sites advised and post back. So excited!

L

|||

Shackvancouver, that%26#39;s why I like Vacation In Paris. You pay in USD, so any further flucuations in the euro will not affect you. Also, they have an incredibly reasonable security deposit. It%26#39;s a flat rate of $150 with a key deposit of $29. That%26#39;s it.

|||

HappyGoin, I just rented from VacationInParis last week and had to send a $300 deposit. Wonder why?

|||

I believe $150 is returned no matter what ,$150 goes towards balance. However should you cancel and Apt. is not rerented you will lose the second $150. The key fee is not returned. It is very nice to get the key before you leave home and not have to call or wait on a manager when you arrive. We did have to call the Paris contact about something and it was taken care of while we were at dinner-within an hour of call. Will be renting w/ VIP again in Aug. First apt was #156 this one will be #78.

Paris Museum Pass

I have questions about the Paris Museum Pass:

1. There are several Museum Passes - which is best?

2. Do they all include Metro Passes

3. Should I purchase the Metro Pass for zones 1 thru 3 or zones 1 thru 6?

4. Can I purchase the ZMuseum Pass when I arrive in Paris as I am leaving in 6 days so I would need to pay 35 Euros to get it her in time.

5. If so where can I buy it (We are staying near the Arc de Triumph)?

Can anyone answer these questions?

Thanks

Colette

|||

1. There is only one Paris Museum Pass:

http://www.parismuseumpass.com/en/home.php

2. The museum pass is only for museums and monuments, not transportation

3. all of Paris is in zones 1-2; Versailles is zone 4, Disney and CDG are zone 5

4. It is best to buy the Museum Pass *in* Paris so you don%26#39;t overspend.

5. You can buy it at the places listed on the above website (point of sale), such as the Tourist Office and any place that accepts the pass.

|||

Thank you for the info.

I will purchase it at CDG airport.

Reagrding a Metro Pass. if we are in Paris for 4 days and only leaving the city once - to go to Versailles - what type of Metro pass would be best?

Thanks,

Colette

|||

Sounds like you arrive on a Sunday. Are you sure you will need a pass? or could you get by on a carnet or two of tickets? (those are zones 1-2). The R/T ticket to Versailles by RER is only around 6€, so no biggie. The carnets are roughly 11€ for the set of 10 tickets (which can be split up among people).

|||

We are arriving next Sunday and leaving Thursday morning.

I think the carnet of tickets will do it. We can buy them at any Metro station dispenser i assume?

Thanks,

Colette

|||

If you arriving overnight from Denver, I would highly recommend you read the many entries on Jet Lag before planning your visit and purchasing your museum pass.

|||

Make sure you plan well to get the most value from your museum pass as it is valid for consecutive days, if you don%26#39;t use it one day that day counts anyhow.

A carnet is a great value, easily available, for Versailles rather than use your museum pass and buying a metro ticket, you might want to look at a forfait lossirs pass which includes everything at versailles (even the headphones) with the exception of the tram if it%26#39;s too much walking for you.

|||

Boomers2 - I wouldn%26#39;t worry about buying the Museum Pass at the airport, unless it%26#39;s convenient for you. It%26#39;s available at most sites, we bought ours in June at the Arc de Triumph, no lines or waiting!

|||

We just returned from a week in Paris. We bought the 4 day museum pass. It was well worth it.

For the Metro we went with the carnet. We walked almost everywhere! The weather was perfect for it. On our last day we still had two tickets each for the metro.

There is just so much to miss if you%26#39;re underground.

|||

Thanks to all who have answered my questions about the Museum Pass.

It was very helpful.

Christmas in Paris with 16 year -Fun, Club, Meal??

Does anyone have any suggestions on Christmas in Paris this year for one adult with one teen?

Looking for-

*Soul/jazz bar, club (not necessarily to drink),

*Christmas dinner - reasonably priced.

*Entertainment - ie. bowling complex and amusement( I know it%26#39;s not usually a Christmassy thing to do but seeking anything where we can relax and have fun)

*Any outdoor things to do apart from Eiffel Tower and the usual Paris attractions. I know about skating.

Seeing to mingle with the locals.

Your replies would really be appreciated.

|||

Is the teen a boy or a girl? And how old?

|||

16 years old - and mixes with both sexes well.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers!

|||

daughter or son?

Cheers,

Magic97

|||

I was in Paris last Christmas with 2 college age girls.

The large ferris wheel was very popular at the Tuillerie Gardens.

Paris Muse

Has anyone taken the Paris Muse Da Vinci Tour??? I was interested in booking this tour but was interested in recommendations.

Sue

|||

no but i like paris

and i like the band muse

and your post tricked me :P

|||

I know this question was written in 2005, but I wanted to give my opinion in case anyone else looks up Paris Muse tours. You must use them if you are an American looking for a first class tour of the enormous museums in Paris. Otherwise, you will be lost!! My boyfriend and I used them for private tours of the Louvre and the Musee d%26#39;Orsay. Both guides were both from the states and were art students. They knew their stuff and we learned so much more than we could have on our own. And they take you to what you should see. Otherwise, you could spend hours just aimlessly walking around. You will not be dissappointed. Worth the money!!

First time to Paris

Hi Guys,

I am considering going to Paris in October. I am 23 and plan to bring my mam and dad on holidays as a treat. I have never been to Paris before so there are a few questions that I need some help with.

Just how large is Paris? I have been to Rome in the past and I found it compact enough to travel by foot, is this possible in Paris?

I plan on staying somewhere central, considering the 1st, 4th, 5th or 6th arr. Which arrondisement would be best suited to my small group. I am especially concerned as to which area is best for the evenings. We are not looking for anything wild, just somewhere to have a nice meal and watch the world go by. Any recommendations?

Any other tips are also welcome.

Thanks guys.

|||

First,, I can%26#39;t help it ,, it is so cute that you call your mother, mam!!

Now to business! I think your plan is lovely, what a considerate daughter, so nice to see a 23 yr old mature enough to want to treat their parents,instead of these great big kids always having mom and dad pay their way ,, well into their adult lives. I am very impressed. Your mom and dad obviously did a great job with you!

I think the 4th, 5th adn 6th are great choices, I am not as fond of the 1st( I have stayed there and found it a bit dead in the evening, not so much character as some other areas .

What is budget?

|||

I%26#39;ve done both Paris and Rome on foot -- about 10 days in each instance. Paris was easier to see in this fashion than was Rome, perhaps not so much due to the size of the city but rather because I stayed in the %26quot;Ancient Rome%26quot; area, and thus had long walks to get to many of the areas of interest. In Paris, I stayed on Rue St Michel -- centrally located at the border of the 5th and 6th districts. This was convenient to most everything, and the 6th is charming beyond belief. It%26#39;s filled with restaurants, cafes, small hotels, and winding narrow streets/alleys. I%26#39;d find a hotel in the area bounded by the Seine, Blvd. St Germain, Blvd St Michel and Rue Bonaparte. I saw most all of central Paris from this base, all on foot; in some cases this involves quite a bit of walking, but if you did this in Rome, I think you%26#39;ll be quite comfortable with Paris.

|||

You can walk losts of places but don%26#39;t forget the Metro which is wonderfully efficient and will take you anywhere. You could, also, do a familiarising coach tour one morning and you must go on a river trip. Pick out the things you really want to see and plan your days around them. Musts I would recommend are: to the top of the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre and Sacre Coeur on a Sunday morning (for the art market - worth people watching if nothing else), the Musee D%26#39;Orsay (lots of art nouveau in a one-time train station) and a snack in the rooftop restaurant of the big store Samaritain. If you have time, do go to Versailles - no wonder there was a revolution!

Trip report - August 2008 Part 3

Day 4 – Monday – After buying some croissants in Bayeux and visiting the cathedral one last time we headed south, stopping in at the race track in Le Mans after a helpful counter girl at a McDonald’s near there drew a map on the back of a paper bag. After visiting the gift shop we paid 5 euros to drive our car into the track area where we pulled over to watch cars practicing and went up in some stands to watch some more. My husband, a race fan, loved it!

Continuing south we reached Tours about an hour later. We stayed at the Hotel Criden in the quad on the top floor. It was a large room but after the tasteful decorations at the Hotel Tardiff, this place screamed 1970’s. At first that, plus hearing the elevator creaking up and down, and wondering why the room had metal grates that cranked down over the patio doors that wouldn’t lock and listening to lots of sirens, I wasn’t sure if I had made a good choice, but the elevator noise didn’t bother us, we made use of the space and it was an ok hotel. The price was very reasonable as well.

Again after the quaint Bayeux surroundings, this location seemed really city-ish and we didn’t warm to it as much. It seemed a bit out of the way.

After a stop at the nearby Tourism Office we visited the cathedral and found it to be very beautiful but a bit run down. Then we found the Place Plumereau and ate outside at the Irish Company. That was a fun setting.

Day 5 – Tuesday – After breakfast at the very nice buffet at the Hotel Criden we started on our quest to find d’Azay de Rideau. FRUSTRATING. We did enjoy our visit there. I didn’t expect it to be right in the middle of a town or village! It took a couple of loops around town to find a parking spot. We got the audioguides which were OK, but the batteries on two of them ran out mid tour requiring a walk back to the entrance and it was sometimes hard to understand the narrator. If I were to do it again I would instead go for an English tour. It reminded me of the castles in Ireland.

We ate at outside at a nearby restaurant and ordering was a bit difficult, but the waitress nicely took my daughter’s and my “well done,” but dripping blood, burgers back to be cooked some more.

Then we strolled back to the village to our car and headed to Villandry without getting lost!!!! We opted not to get an audio guide and just walked through the house and gardens. My daughter liked this chateau better because you could picture people living in it. The gardens were beautiful and there were a lot of people there.

Went back to Tours and back to the cathedral we had visited to climb to an upper area that my daughter had noticed you could tour. Then it was back to the Place Plumereau for dinner outside.

Day 6 – Wednesday – After breakfast we packed up, checked out and headed to Chenonceau. And got lost. Again. When we arrived it was PACKED with a massive line for tickets. It’s quite the commercial operation there! We got the audio guides – iPods which included music, photos/paintings, etc, of people being referred to. After touring the chateau we had lunch at the cafeteria, sitting outside. THEN we rented a row boat for 4 Euros for 30 minutes and took turns rowing under and around the chateau – lots of fun.

Then we headed towards Paris. To be continued …. tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187147-i14-k22285…

I enjoyed reading your trip post. My husband and I are planning a 23 day trip to France in April/May 2009. Did you go to the car museum in Le Mans? I am planning on stopping in Le Mans too to see the museum and track on our way to St. Mont Michel. It%26#39;s great to read about other%26#39;s experiences of their vacations. I can%26#39;t wait to go and I feel like I have seen some of it through your travels. Thanks again.

|||

I%26#39;m glad my report was helpful!

All we did in Le Mans was to visit the track (and the gift shop.) We decided not to go into the museum at the track in order to keep the stop brief. Is that the car museum you are referring to?

Connie

|||

Connie,

I am not sure where the museum is in Le Mans. I found it on this site and have it saved under my trips. My husband loves cars and all the types of racing that goes along with it. Will you give me some imput on my trip?

Fly into Paris- One night at Marriott near airport. Pick up car and maybe go to Giverny for the day.

-Drive to Amboise for 3 nights. See Chateaus and do some winetasting.

-Drive to Mont St. Micheal for one night.

-Drive to Bayeaux for 4 nights. We are doing two tours with Battlebus.(will take 3 days).

-Drive to Honfluer for one night.

-Drive to Ghent for two nights. Do a day trip Bruggs.

-Drive to Brussells for two nights.

-Drive to Bastogne for two nights. We have booked a private tour with a guide to see battle of the buldge tour.

-Drive to Reims for two nights. See champagne houses and small towns.

-Drive to Paris for three nights. Go to Versailles, go to disneyland Paris one day and see sights of Paris that we have not seen yet. ( We have done all the museums on two other trips to Paris).

|||

Connie,

I did check and it is next to the racing circut. Sorry, my post was so long. I am hoping to make a visit short also in Le Mans. I thought we could see the museum and now I know that we can drive on the track. We will be driving a leased car so it won%26#39;t be a fast lap but fun anyways. Thanks for the help.

Darla

|||

Darla -

I can comment on just some of it. As you saw we left right from CDG for Giverney and ran out of steam on the way from there to Bayeux. Staying overnight upon arrival might have been a good idea.

Three days would probably be enough time to see the chateaus you want to - someone on TA mentioned getting chateau-ed out. As much as I loved them, more than 3 would have pushed us over the edge I think.

4 nights in Bayeaux will be nice. We had 3 and I almost shifted one of them to Tours and I%26#39;m glad that I didn%26#39;t.

%26lt;Go to Versailles%26gt;

I would recommend the Fat Tire Bike Tour!

%26lt;go to disneyland Paris one day%26gt;

Thought about going but decided not to.

%26lt;and see sights of Paris that we have not seen yet. ( We have done all the museums on two other trips to Paris).%26gt;

Sounds good.

%26lt;now I know that we can drive on the track.%26gt;

You can WHAT on the WHAT????? Don%26#39;t tell my husband that!! We were able to drive around to different parts of the track and watch some race cars doing laps. Even that made him happy!

Sounds like you will have a great trip!

Connie

|||

Connie,

Thanks for the imput on my up coming trip. We are both looking forward to it. It is still 7 months away. I thought that I had read that you could drive on the track? No? My husband loves to watch all the car races on T.V. and we did see the race this year at Le Mans on T.V.

The only reason we are going to Disneyland Paris is because I have a friend that works for Disney and we get free tickets. I am interested to see the difference between the one in Calif. and Paris. I love Disney anyways so it should be a fun time.

I don%26#39;t plan on seeing more than three chateaus unless we feel like it when we are there. I want to see Chenoceau and Chambord and maybe one of the smaller ones. I do want to find some good wines to buy to take with us on our journey though France and Belgium. I hear that Chinon has good red wines.

Thanks again- Darla

Mugged in Paris?

We have friends who live in New York City %26amp; they carry %26quot;mugging%26quot; money to give instead of getting hurt or losing a lot. Is there any need to do this in Paris? Is it a good idea?

amb

|||

bambam, you need to spend some time on the Paris forum( Europe for that matter) . Mugging is not a huge issue ,, you are far more likely to be pickpocketed, and those of us who are careful, and take precautions don%26#39;t worry about that occuring either.

|||

Hello bambam, I%26#39;ve got to agree with Joan on this.. if it makes you feel safe to carry a bit of %26#39;mugging%26#39; money %26#39;just in case%26#39; then go ahead. Chances are, this won%26#39;t be needed, especially if you read other pickpocket related threads and take the advice of other posters. Be smart, know where your belongings are at all times, know who is within your personal space.. etc.

|||

Well, thanks for the little bit of snootiness in the reply joan1. I have been on the Paris forum a lot in the last 8 weeks. No, I haven%26#39;t seen that mugging is an issue but it doesn%26#39;t hurt to ask. Having lived in and visited several big cities, anything can happen. We certainly do intend to be careful as we are anywhere. Thanks.

|||

yes, you%26#39;re right.. anything can happen. in any big city. if you keep your wits about you in paris, as you would in any big city, you%26#39;ll be fine.

here are a couple of links that may be of interest to you. if you do a quick search for pickpocket or scam, you%26#39;ll find many more.

ps. i didn%26#39;t find joan%26#39;s comment to be particularly snarky.

|||

Mrytle,

thank you for the links. i will check them out. i have read many re: pickpockets %26amp; scams. like i said, this was just a question i thought should be asked given the size of the city. mugging is common in most american cities. having never been to europe, i was wondering.

if i took joan%26#39;s comment wrong then i apologize. however, i felt it was a BIT snotty. i%26#39;m sure she will let me know if there was none of that and i will again apologize.

|||

Late at night it is a good idea. Actually, I find it useful to always have some cash on hand(not too much), for many purposes, I keep it in my purse, where it%26#39;s easily accessible, and hide the rest. Never carry money or anything of value in my pockets though, because than its %26#39;too%26#39; accessible.

Cheers

|||

I am totally with Joan on this one. You are far more likely to encounter pickpockets than muggers in Paris. It would seem that there are so many easy pickpocketing targets that mugging is hardly necessary.

A bit of cash is much safer in a deep front pocket of slacks or inside zipper pocket than %26quot;easily accessible in a purse%26quot;.

In fact, the pickpockets are expert at their %26quot;art%26quot; and selecting %26quot;targets%26quot;.

The very best line of defense is to know how to secure anything/everything important to you, then not worry about it.

|||

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;I am totally with Joan on this one. You are far more likely to encounter pickpockets than muggers in Paris. It would seem that there are so many easy pickpocketing targets that mugging is hardly necessary.%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;

Mugging--ala NYC and other US cities--is a relatively RARE occurence in Paris. Petty-thieves-of-opportunity--pickpockets--are certainly an OCCASIONAL problem....but it would be a mistake to presume that there were marauding hordes of petty-thieves-of-opportunity, preying on hapless tourists. They exist...so it%26#39;s always a good idea to be %26#39;..situationally aware..%26#39; and keep your personal possessions and property secure and under your control---don%26#39;t put your bag down on a bench and then wander off and leave it unattended to find a better camera-angle for your snapshot...or leave your purse on a chair at a café when you go to the bathroom. Don%26#39;t be STUPID and you%26#39;ll be safer in Paris than you are crossing the parking lot of your local COSTCO.

You must understand that in NYC it is not unknown to have a knife or handgun stuck in your face to facilitate the handing over of cash - this I know from experience - once a 357 Magnum (Dirty Harry%26#39;s weapon of choice) and another time a 9mm Glock. Neither mugger was old enough to vote.

It%26#39;s not something you have to worry about in Paris - as has been said, you may get your pocket picked, you might even have your bag snatched, and if you walk away from your luggage on the street it%26#39;s probably going to take its own trip - but nobody is going to stick a gun in your face.

The reason for the difference is simple. The French (British, Italians, or whoever) would bring down their government if they had to accept the levels of personal danger that Americans regularly put up with. It would create a political scandal that no politician or political party could survive. The people wouldn%26#39;t tolerate it, and so it doesn%26#39;t happen.

I most often travel in Europe without my husband. I live like a European and dine on their schedules. That means that I%26#39;m out after dark every night. I travel by bus, the Metro, and on foot, and I%26#39;ve never felt unsafe, no matter where I was staying and no matter what the hour. I%26#39;ve had no problems and I%26#39;m quite sure you%26#39;ll have none, as well.

Bon voyage.

Neew help planning a 4 day trip to Amboise 19-23 0ct. 08

We will be in Amboise for 4 1/2 days and need help in planning the trip. Any suggestions? We will have a rental car.

|||

Well... this sort of question is just TOO open!!

What sort of thing do you like??

Have you looked at any guide books or maps??

Have you done any web research of your own, to give us some ideas??

Why do you want to go to Amboise?? IF you THINK about that, then perhaps you will come up with some of your own answers.

|||

Yes to the questions if about web searcy and 3 books. We are interested in seeing the Chateaus.

I quess what I need is a day to day plan ro see the most Chateaus so that we won%26#39;t be back tracking. We have narrowed the Chateaus down to the 3%26amp; 2 star Chateaus that the books recommend visitors to see.

Ijust need 1st day see--- 2nd day--- etc.

NRC70

|||

I have found you an online map which shows the basic %26#39;layout%26#39; of where the Chateaux are situated. Armed with this and a decent road map of the area, you should be able to sort out %26#39;Day 1%26#39; and %26#39;Day 2%26#39; for yourself, especially as, at present, YOU are the only one who knows which Chateaux you want to visit!!

chateaux-de-la-loire.fr/loire_valley_map.htm

|||

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;We have narrowed the Chateaus down to the 3%26amp; 2 star Chateaus that the books recommend visitors to see.%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Mmmm. 3 and 2 star chateaux, good choice.

If we knew the names, we could help plan an overall itinerary.

In the absence of a better reference, on the east side of Tours I recommend the châteaux of: Blois, Chambord, Chenonceau, and perhaps Cheverny (mainly because it is one of the only furnished château and because it is easily visited in conjunction with seeing Chambord). Noticeably absent from my list is the château of Amboise itself which has been largely dissembled and the stone used in its original construction sold. The Clos Lucé in Amboise is interesting but does not really have either the architectural interest or historical significance of the other mentioned locations.

In lieu of these overly hyped venues, visit a local wine producer and visit a cave where much of the stone used in the construction of the areas châteaux was taken. Call for an appointment:

http://cavegrandebrosse.com/

On the west side of Tours is Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau. Due to the ever growing traffic of Tours, these are more difficult to reach from Amboise than the other châteaux but are worthy destinations none the less. You could throw in a visit to old Tours and have a nice 2-3 day package.

There are several tourist oriented activities in or near Amboise (which I personally find of little value) such as le Parc des Mini Châteaux, Aquarium du Val de Loire, and Lulu Parc but overall I should consider 3 days in this area as sufficient. With 4 days, I recommend staying in Tours itself where there will be a wider restaurant choice, museums, concerts, shopping (not just tourist trinkets), and several areas of considerable interest such as the cathedral and the aforementioned Vieux Tours.

I%26#39;ve decided to give each of my recommended locations 3 stars.

How did I compare with the book?

|||

Many thanks to all that have sent their ideas for our trip.The idea to do the northern Chateaus as a day trip then the South and West Chateaus together.

We do plan to just ride some country roads,check out a winery and some %26quot;local%26quot; resturants. We have an apt. in Amboise so we can take wome leisure time.

Thanks again
