Where to begin 2 week trip June 2009- South or Alps

Still planning a 2-3 week trip to France, with the last week of June in Paris for a wedding. Thinking about leaving the US around June 8. We definitely want to see the French Alps, and are considering Chamonix, and also considering Cote d%26#39;Azur/Languedoc for the beaches, etc., and possibly a stop in Loire for a day or two on the way up to Paris the week of June 22.

Not sure if we should start south and work towards Chamonix or start in Chamonix and then head south. I am leaning towards the latter, as I%26#39;m thinking the later in June, the warmer it will be south, but not sure if a week or two will make a difference.

We will be traveling with two children 7 and 4. Will probably fly direct to the first location from NY (at least as direct as possible), and either rent a car or take the train to the remainder of the destinations. Planning on spending 5-6 days in one location in each area, and day trip to surrounding areas.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated!

Assuming you%26#39;re wanting to get up into the mountains in Chamonix, one thing to check for is the dates when the lifts will be open. Looking at the info for 2008, it looks like some don%26#39;t start operating until mid-June. compagniedumontblanc.fr/pages/horaires_ete_g…

Thanks Diz - I didn%26#39;t consider that. I%26#39;ll check that out.
