My husband and I are in the same age range as you and we have spent many holidays in Nice. We love to go to the Libertea Cafe off Rue Massena for pre- dinner drinks (they give you generous appetisers with each drink ordered i.e. mini pizza slices, olives, nuts etc.)We have had good meals at the following spots:
La Coupole (Rue de France)where you can sit overlooking the pedestrain zone and watch the world go by.We love the Soupe a l%26#39;Oignon!!It%26#39;s to die for...
Bocaccia (Rue Massena) - quite expensive, but great for Paella and seafood.
Indian restaurant in Place Grimaldi (can%26#39;t remember the name but it%26#39;s the only one there.)
La Havana (Rue de France) is a Cuban bar/restaurant if you fancy some Latin music and dancing (weekends).
In the old town/Cours Salaya try Chez Juliette, Le Comptoir or La Fontaine in Place Rosetti.
For a really different experience there is a vegetarian restaurant (La Zucca Magica) near the port where you get what the chef brings to you - no choice, no idea how many courses, red or white wine(again no choice), but all very well cooked and presented.(Costs about 35 euros each)
You will find it hard to get a bad meal in Nice, honestly.Enjoy!
