Hyeres - Town or Beach

Hi All

I have been reading the very helpful posts regarding Hyeres and the surronding Islands and I cannot wait for my long weekend break at the beginning of October.

I have one question though - where should I base myself - Old town, or Beach? I certainly want to experience both and would like to relax, walk, see the sights and get across to the Islands. However I still cannot decide whether to get a hotel in the town or by the beach.

I know it%26#39;s a difficult question as it%26#39;s down to personal preference, however any guidence would be very grateful

Good question and one that exercises me every time I am there.

Will you have a car? If so, I would say definitely town. The most interesting restaurants are in the town and you want to be able to imbibe freely, I%26#39;m sure. The bus service down the peninsula ends horribly early out of season see www.sodetrav.fr/horaires.asp and it%26#39;s bus no 67 you want to get to Tour Fondue for Porquerolles or anywhere along the peninsula.

However if you haven%26#39;t got a car and are relying on the bus, you need to decide if you want to be mainly beach rather than town. You can actually stay ON Porquerolles, there are a couple of hotels, or in Giens, or along the peninsula you could stay at La Capte which has a lot of restaurants and a port and is a short walk from the beaches (as I remember, I%26#39;m sure someone else will correct me if I%26#39;m wrong) and close to the airport.

I%26#39;ve always stayed in the town, twice at Hotel les Orangers, which is within walking distance of the bus station (10 minutes) and the train station (20 minutes).

Hope this is some help.

There%26#39;s something exhilarating about waking up to views over the Mediterranean Sea, especially when you otherwise live away from the sea.

So, as much as I enjoy the old town of Hyères for its character, its history, its authenticity, I would vote for a hotel by the coast.

Here%26#39;s one I like: very unpretentious (but won%26#39;t break the bank), with a good location by the beach, half way between the tip of the Giens Peninsula and the town of Hyères: Hotel Lido Beach (http://www.lido-beach.com). If the weather behaves, you%26#39;ll be enjoying your breakfast on the beach as it%26#39;s right by the water.

From the hotel, you can easily reach the old town of Hyères or the ferry boat (http://www.tlv-tvm.com/) that takes you to Port-Cros island from the Hyères port next door. To visit the island of Porquerolles, the easiest will be to hop on the ferry from the Tour Fondue at the southern tip of the Giens Peninsula a little further out.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately I won%26#39;t have a car as it%26#39;s just a cheap long weekend break. Fingers crossed the weather will be nice and I can enjoy the beach and the islands. Very tempted to go for the beach option - but then that is a gamble with the weather!

In October, the hotels should have plenty of vacancies so keep your options open to switch hotels the second night to where you see fit.

Weather has been tropical the last 2-3 days: nighttime downpours, some dark morning clouds, and sunshine in the afternoon. Sunshine is planned for tomorrow to week%26#39;s end, but there%26#39;s no predicting much beyond 3-4 days... keep those fingers crossed.
