Beaune winery tours

Can anyone recommend a company which does winery tours, departing from Beaune?

Any comments on the experience?

We had a tour of Cote de Beaune in June with Burgundy on a Plate.

They have a selection of wine tours and also some other tasting tours. There were four of us and we had a really enjoyable day and we certainly picked up a lot of information. We tasted a lot of different wines and we saw some great Burgundy countryside too. We are amateur wine lovers but didn%26#39;t know much about Burgundy - we do now! I think Burgundy on a Plate picks up from Beaune mostly. I would recommend the tour for anyone wanting to be looked after for the day!

We did a tour with Burgundy on a Plate and would NOT recommend this company. The guide drove us around in a hired vehicle which she was uncomfortable driving and her driving was appaling. Her knowledge was limited and she didn%26#39;t give much more information than we had read in the guide book. We found her rude and without personal skills

On a positive note, she did take us to a couple of small wine producers that we wouldn%26#39;t have been able to see without her introduction.

Pick your tour very carefully, I would recommend that you find out who your guide will be and what they know about the region before you book a tour. You may also want to consider a half day tour or a tasting lunch as the full day tours involve tasting about 30 wines and you get a bit overwhelmed with it all by about the 10th sip!

You could try http://www.burgundydiscovery.com/ which will pick up in Beaune. If you search the forum archives, there is a bit of feedback about them.

Here%26#39;s someone who was strongly recommended on another site:

Colette BARBIER (Cobatour@aol.com)

I just did a Burgundy on a Plate Tour day-tour and would highly recommend it. The tour guide (Sue) was very knowledgable of the region and took us to wineries and areas in the region that we would not have seen on other tours. She took the time to get to know our level of expertise with wine and made sure that we felt comfortable the entire trip. She picked us up at the train station and dropped us back at the end of the tour (we were staying in Paris). All in all it was an extrememly enjoyable day and I plan to contact Burgundy on a Plate again when planning a longer trip in the region.

Do not join the Beaune wine tours from the tourist office. The tour was a disappointment in my opinion. They drove us around (a group of 8) in a mini van which was comfortable, and the guide was very friendly and spoke excellent English. However, all that happened was that he drove us to different areas and different vineyards, explained certain things about wines and vines, and then finally proceeded to a very small winemaker for tasting and purchasing. For a similar amount, I got a much better tour at Tuscany.

I would recommend Maxs Wine, Historical and Discovery tours. Max is a tour guide who has lived and worked in the Côtes de Beaune and the Côtes de Nuit for the last 25 years, he is a very enthusiastic and a fun person to be with. His programme is for a full day with lunch in a cellar in a famous wine village, here you can eat their excellent garlic snails and Coq au Vin. Max has already been recommended by other tripadvisor members. The price for 2 persons 300 euros lunch is extra pick p either in Dijon or Beaune. He and his wife operate self catering city centre apartments in the heart of the historical city of Dijon

www.dijon-rentahome.com, here you will find their programme for the Wine tours.

I also heartily recommend Max. My husband and I did a tour with him in late September, and we found him knowledgeable, friendly, flexible, and very reasonably priced. A full day tour with Max will cost you less than half of what you will pay with Burgundy Discovery -- although we also did a full-day tour with them and enjoyed it very much. For the price, though, you can%26#39;t beat Max. You will pay for lunch separately with Max; Burgundy Discovery includes it in their price. I have posted about this issue previously on this forum, for additional comments. Enjoy!

We also would STRONGLY NOT RECOMMEND %26quot;Burgundy on a Plate%26quot;. Sue the operator, was rude, a poor driver and had little knowledge about wines or wine tasting. She was condescending, self serving, with the people skill of a parking inspector.

On the one day tour she takes you to two small cellars which you would not otherwise get to visit (The only up side of the tour). As she arrived at the first cellar she literally demanded bluntly that we had to buy wine, irrespective of whether we liked it or not.

There is a lunch tasting organised by one of the larger growers. The wine at this was poor considering the region and the food was similar quality.

My level of contempt is such that I joined trip advisor purely to warn people about this tour. The tour would much better if she didn%26#39;t speak a word of English. DO NOT USE THIS TOUR OPERATOR.
