apartment in nice - which area?

Wondering about several areas in Nice for apartment rental. We have found 4 apartments that we like, all good quality and price. One is on Rue Rossini, one on rue theodore de banville close to the tram stop, one on Avenue Durane near the intersection of Rue I%26#39;talie, and the last in Old Nice on Rue du Chateau. We don%26#39;t mind walking or taking public transportation and want to have shops and cafes within walking distance. We are not party animals and will want a fairly quiet location. We plan on no car and relying on public transportation this leg of our journey, using bus and train for out of Nice excursions. Any help in our decision making process?

I%26#39;d go for the one in the old town, on rue du Chateau.

Rue Rossini is quite a long street and would be a second choice. It%26#39;s a fairly residential area, but depending on where on the street you are, there aren%26#39;t too many shops and restaurants nearby. It%26#39;s not a bad choice, but I just wouldn%26#39;t want to stay there for a holiday.

Rue Theodore de Banville may be near a tram stop, but it%26#39;s well out of the centre of town.

Avenue Durante is in the centre, near the railway station. There are lots of shops and restaurants there, and you%26#39;re close to everything, but if you%26#39;re at all nervous about walking down streets where there are lots of men loitering around (even tho%26#39; they%26#39;re not dangerous), then you%26#39;ll feel uncomfortable here. There%26#39;s a large North African community in this area of town, and although I like the area and regularly walked through it on my way to and from work, I%26#39;ve lived in Nice for a long time. Many of my friends from outside Nice won%26#39;t go to this area at night on their own. So, if you%26#39;re not used to big cities and big crowds of men, don%26#39;t choose this area.

The road you mention in the old town is just off the main tourist paths. There may be a bit of street noise, but you%26#39;ll be right in the centre of things. If you%26#39;ve never been to Nice before, then this would be my choice.

I would not go to the old town if you want peace and quiet at night - its very very noisy and the narrow streets emphasise the noise. There are a lot of late clubs ad bars in the old town so there will be people walking around noisily after 2am .

A lot of people enjoy being in the buzz of an old mediaeval town though.

Asw the previous poster mentions, the area round Ave Durante can be intimidating if you don%26#39;t know the area- there is NO trouble there at all but before we lived in Nice we were told to avoid the area. We were concerned in case our teenage daughter would get hassle -she doesn%26#39;t. People in crowds speaking till late at night though can be noisy though the area is ideal and handy for everything

Rossini might be ok or it might be a bit out of the way -its certainly not as in the midst of things as the other 3. It should be quiet at night

theodore de banville is a good choice IMO - quiet at night -close to the chemin de fer de porvence station for trips on the train des pignes, a short walk or tram ride to the gare sncf and gare routire , local fruit veg and fish market , shops and cafes- very much a real non touristy area

We stayed on the first floor in the Old Town, this summer.

We closed the windows at night and were not disturbed - except by the heat.

The Old Town is the perfect area to stay for a holiday - close to the Promenade/sea and surrounded by wonderful restaurants and interesting little streets.

It is near the bus station, the tram, the castle, the port, the flower market, the modern art museum, cafes and bars.

We were worried about the noise but it wasn%26#39;t a problem, and the wonderful position is worth the risk of a bit of disturbed sleep in my opinion.

You can always have a quick nap in the day if you are tired - it%26#39;s not as though you have to work all the next day.

The central area of Nice is very small, about a 20 minute walk from one side to the other, so it doesn%26#39;t really matter where you stay. I have friends who live in the old town, my favourite area during the day, and they are often disturbed by noise at night. When I was young I could sleep through anything, now I can%26#39;t and would avoid the old town.

Ave Durante/Rue Italie has a buzz which frightens some people but I feel very comfortable there. Rue Rossini is less interesting but probably the quietest location.

Strongly advise in the old town near the flower market will be wonderful for activity shops and best of all dining out - plus you will be only a minutes walk from the promenade ! I stayed on Ave de Sueide immediately beside the casino and it was an excellent choice - there is a bus from/to the airport which goes thro place massena at the old town end and just beside the casino - it then plies its way along the promenade. Recommend climbing the hill to see the fountain - its a great climb and the cemetery has a a stunning view plus on top there is a cafe to relax take air and wine! as well as people watch...enjoy - I have some different Nice pics at www.flickr.com/photos/aidanmcmichael

We%26#39;ve just returned after two weeks in Nice, and had two apartments, in Rue Rossini the first week, and Rue Massena the second. Rue Rossini was a much better location than we thought - easy access to everywhere on foot, supermarket and good bakery very near, quiet at night, residential, but still some interesting people-watching opportunities! Rue Massena, whilst often marketed as a pedestrian area, and thus quiet, is actually very noisy early in the morning; it%26#39;s a commercial area, and delivery drivers are not the quietest species on the planet.

If it happens to be Palais Armida, 8 Rue Rossini, rented out by Riviera Rentals, grab it - the apartment is fabulous. We%26#39;re picky, have stayed in about a hundred rental cottages/apartments in the last 10 years, and there are 4 that we would return to. This is one of them. Riviera Rentals also gave excellent service, and we can thoroughly recommend them.
