Trip Report - Sept 14 - 21/08

We ended our vacation with a week in Paris. We flew in from Bristol in the UK on Sunday afternoon and took the RER and Metro to the Hotel Porte Doree in the 12e. This is a great hotel not in the centre of town but with easy access to the Metro - normally Staion Porte Doree but this is closed for renovation at the moment, so go up the road to Station Michel Bizot. We took in all the usual sights - Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Musee D%26#39;Orsay, Arc de Triomphe etc and I would certainly recommend a museum pass and a metro pass of whatever kind suits you best. What really made our Paris experience though was all the other stuff that we did - renting a rowboat and having a picnic in the Bois de Vincennes, going to the markets, the boulangerie, walking through the different neighbourhoods and just finding places and things on our own. We stumbled onto beautiful buildings and churches, little cafes and even a wild Paris parade/rave with techno music blaring, goth kids dancing and police in riot gear! We found that once you leave the familiar tourist areas, not that many people speak English but it didn%26#39;t matter. We spoke French everywhere and even when we didn%26#39;t understand everything or our French wasn%26#39;t spoken properly, everyone we met was friendly, helpful and polite. Try to learn at least a few simple phrases and words - finally a chance to use those years of French class from high school! We had a great time in Paris and would love to go again.
