We will be in Normandy for a week in early October. I have 4 boys, who I think would love staying in the Suisse Normande area (specifically we are thinking of renting in Pont-d%26#39;Ouilly), but am worried it is a bit too out of the way driving-wise to the other sites we wish to see, such as Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, Mont St-Michel, etc. I think we may be better off staying up near Bayeux, which seems a bit more centrally located. Any thoughts?

I would definitely say you would be better off at that time of year staying in Bayeux. Suisse Normande is lovely and in October will be particularly beautiful with the trees changing colours but I think you may find a lot of the activities that would attract your boys to the area will be closed at this time of year and it does take a while to get anywhere else from there, by virtue of the landscape, hills, twisting lanes etc.

Thanks so much for confirming what I thought -- just wanted to make sure. Maybe we will try to visit that area in the summer next time :) Thanks again!

Bayeux is the best place to stay for visiting the beaches. For Mont St Michel it%26#39;s about the same distance as Suisse Normande. (It%26#39;s called Switzerland in Normandy as it%26#39;s the nearest thing we have to mountains) For you trip to the beaches be sure to take a guided tour or guide or audio guide or you%26#39;ll flounder around.
Visit the chateau and abbeys at Caen as well.
Also there%26#39;s the ruins of a roman villa at Vieux near Caen. A prehistoric tumulus at Coulombier.
