I have been reading a few posts, and many suggest that a half day of sightseeing is enough in Avignon. We will be staying for 2 nights, roughly 1.5 days. Should I plan to visit another town like Arles or Nimes in the second afternoon? Or just maybe relax and enjoy the french atmosphere? Can I have some thoughts please TA?

Oh I forgot to mention we are train travelling.

You could use part of your time in Avignon to take a tour of the surrounding area with e.g. www.ventoux-decouvertes.com/sommaire_gb.php3

I can spend half a day in Avignon just sitting in a cafe watching the world go by but I suspect that would just be a waste of your valuable holiday time.
I like the suggestion from the previous post or you might like to try a short river trip on the Rhone. The local tourist office will have full details of what is available when you get there.
I would avoid spending too much time on public transport but as you suggest concentrate on soaking up the Provencal atmosphere.

People who say one half day is enough simply stick to Avignon and don%26#39;t cross the Rhône. What a mistake! Villeneuve les Avignon on the other bank is very charming and very interesting, there is a gorgeous abbey, beautiful houses and nices walks:

If it%26#39;s not already in your itinerary, you should definitely go to Arles, unmissable IMO with loads of stuff to see, Roman ruins, the cathedral and cloister, loads of van Gogh connections. Additionally you could go to the pont du Gard. You could also try a visit to St Remy, an exquisite small town and easy to get to from Avignon by bus. St Remy has a wonderful market on Wednesday mornings. Or l%26#39;Isle sur la Sorgue, with a fantastic antiques market on Sunday mornings, also a short bus trip away.

Thankyou all so much, I think we will add exploring Villeneuve les Avignon by foot and maybe take a river trip if they are available in October. I like the idea of not rushing around taking public transport if we don%26#39;t have to.

The Pont du Gard is definitely worth a visit, as is Nimes.
If you have the time, I would also recommend a trip to Sète, a lovely fishing town which is just over an hour away from Avignon by train.

I could spend hours (and have) just sitting somewhere in Avignon and watching the people stroll by. There are excellent restaurants, shopping (or window shopping), and museums. Do not rush through this city.
However, given your short time frame, if you do decide to venture out of town make it a trip to Pont du Gard. You%26#39;ll not regret making the effort.

We spent a week in Avignon, and found that there is lots to see. During this week we had one day (by train to Arles) and a day (by bus to Villeneuve Les Avignon). We ran out of time to go further afield, but we will go back to the area which is lovely.
