Is it safe at Paris??

I and my wife are from Singapore, we will be visiting Paris next week.

We are advised by my friends who have been Paris before that Paris is not safe for Asian. He saw Asian were beaten at Metro station but no people help them. Another friend were targetted by pickpocket in Metro, those pickpockets like to target Asian. They advise us not to go out after 7pm...

We are really worried, both me and my wife are small size. Is it really that unsafe in Paris?

We are going to stay at Hotel Sofia 21, rue Sofia. Is the location a safe place? Can somebody advise us....??

You might get a bigger response if you posted specifically on the Paris Forum, as not everyone goes into the general France Forum.

I think Paris is generally safe, but admittedly I%26#39;m not Asian. There are unfortunately some pickpockets about, but they don%26#39;t target Asians, as Europeans and Americans have also been their victims. Your hotel is a little way out from the centre in Montmartre. Although I think it unlikely that you will run into any problems, if you are worried about safety somewhere nearer the centre such as the 4th, 5th and 6th arrondissements might have been a better choice.

I don%26#39;t think your friends have done you a

favour by getting you so upset before what

should be a wonderful trip.

Paris is a big city and violence and bad things can certainly happen. But are you likely to be the recipient of this violence? Chances are you will not.

Take the same precautions you would take anywhere... if pickpocketing is a concern use

a money belt. Be aware of what is going on around you and stay out of the same type of areas you%26#39;d avoid at home... don%26#39;t take a shortcut to your hotel down a dark alley

at 2 am.

Your area and hotel are not in what would be called the most savoury area of Paris but

I have no doubt you will be fine.

I find it hard to believe Parisian criminals

specifically target Asians... it seems to me crooks the world over are most likely to pounce on the unwary and most isolated of people no matter what their ethnicity.

So try to relax and enjoy one of the world%26#39;s

great cities!

I am a middle aged woman and I travel alone to Paris sometimes, and sometimes with a child. I feel safe. I am very careful of pickpockets,, that will be the most important thing. Please read about how to be safe from them.

I am not Asian , so I cannot tell if there is a problem with that, but, I do think that most pickpockets may try and steal from anyone of any race that they think is %26quot;easy%26quot; looking.. I look serious and I am careful not to let anyone stand too close to me, do not allow people to crowd around you or distract you .

Do not be afraid, really , central Paris is quite safe. Keep your big money and passports in your hotel safe, or in a moneybelt. Not in purse or wallet in pocket. Just keep money for one day with you.

How can you have dinner if you stay in hotel after 7 pm,?? That is a bit silly. My 12 yr old daughter and I would have dinner and walk home to our hotel at 10 at night by ourselves. If you are very nervous find a restaurant near hotel, but do not stay in room all evening, that is too sad .

Please do not let your friends comments worry you so much,, Paris is safer then many large cities in the world, and I think violent crime is not so great as many either. I feel less safe in my own city( late at night) ,which is much smaller.

Be careful, read the posts about pickpockets, they will look for you, so look for them first!

Have a fun time, Paris is very beautiful.

Your hotel is a very inexpensive hotel, it is not in central Paris, and you will need to use the metro or buses to get to all the main sites( except maybe Sacre Coeur).

Did a travel agent help you pick this hotel?

It has only 6 reviews on this site, but they all say it is clean .

I am not familar with the area, but I would be careful around some the area late at night, do not walk in parks after dark.

well KNNB, the choice of your hotel is certainely not a good choice. The rue de Sofia is located near the Goutte d%26#39;Or area, and is not particulary adapted for tourists worried about safety. And moreover, the hotel choosed is a one star out of everything. If you have the opportunity try to change your plan and try to find something in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th district ...

Paris is not unsafe - the problem is that the bad guys know that many tourists carry more cash then the local folks do, so it%26#39;s necessary to pay attention to the folks around you and keep your big money and passports in a money belt or neck wallet (under your clothing).

I agree that you should change your hotel if you can. You%26#39;ll be much more comfortable in the areas that have been suggested by other posters because there will be many people on the street until quite late and there will be more choices for brasseries and restaurants.
