Lactose-reduced milk in Paris Supermarkets?

Hi TAs,

We leave for Paris in 5 weeks \o/

As we%26#39;ll be there for 10 days, and my son is lactose intolerant, do you know if there are bottles/cartons of lactose-reduced milk in Paris supermarkets?

Thank you,

Karen

Boy, does someone else know? I know from our June visit that the little supermarkets have a tiny selection of everything, like one brand, size of milk. I do remember seeing soy milk. Maybe someone else knows where you could buy some, those neighborhood groceries have a very limited selection of everything (we%26#39;re a little spoiled in the U.S., too many choices.)

I never saw any. You may try a health food store--there is a chain called Naturalia. I was amazed at the tiny milk bottles over there--usually only one choice. I never knew if it was whole milk or low fat, much less lactose reduced. Also, you better find the french translation for lactose-reduced milk so you can ask in French.

Thanks K and Alice,

I looked for a translation so for the interest of other LI people, it%26#39;s called %26quot;lait sans lactose%26quot; (lactose free) or %26quot;bas lait de lactose%26quot; (low lactose). Hoping that there%26#39;s some at a Monoprix etc as he can%26#39;t tolerate soymilk either :(

Some other milk selections are:

entier - whole milk

demi-écrémé - semi-skimmed

écrémé - skimmed

My wife is lactose intolerant and I don%26#39;t recall seeing any lactose reduced milk in the stores. My wife takes Lactaid (I don%26#39;t know if you can get it in AUS) with all the milk products she eats or drinks. I would think that there would be some kind of lactose enzyme pill out there if he wanted to eat or drink dairy.

Some %26quot;G20%26quot; supermarkets carry lactose-reduced milk.

You could ask the nearest pharmacy

There is a lot of lactose reduced milk in France. It will be on the same shelves as the UHT milk in the supermarkets, not in cooler cabinets.

My Mother in Law is lactose intolerant and couldn%26#39;t find any, but there were actually 4 different varieties (inclusing an %26quot;own brand%26quot;) on the shelf. This was in a supermarche (SuperU) in a small country town, so I assume Paris will have the same sort of range. The Intermarche in the next village had only 2 varieties.

Still - it shouldn%26#39;t be too difficult to find, as long as you%26#39;re looking in the right place.

Karen, you used to be able to buy a product in Australia which you added to regular milk to make it lactose-free - I can%26#39;t remember now what it was called.

It%26#39;s a long time since I needed to use it, but from memory it was in drop form - a certain number of drops depending on the size of the bottle.

I used to buy it from health food shops here in Perth, and it was fairly widely available.

It might be worth asking in your local health food shop. Even if you find lactose-free milk in the supermarket, it%26#39;s a useful thing to have on hand in an emergency when you can%26#39;t find any.

Thank you so much to everyone.

I had a go at emailing (in English) La Grand Epicierie in Bon Marche, and they emailed me with a reply in English the next day!

They don%26#39;t stock it but suggested a product called %26quot;Zero%26quot; by Valio which can be bought at Auchan supermarkets (bad luck they%26#39;re on the outskirts of Paris, unless anyone knows of one in the city). But at least we have a name to ask for.

I%26#39;ll also look for that enzyme product for him here as that might also help.

Thanks again for all of your responses,

Regards Karen

There is at least one Auchan store in Paris at:

92 rue Reamur (2nd arr.)

BTW Zero is a lactosefree milk POWDER which you mix with water or other liquid.
