I was at a luggage store recently and purchased one of those portable luggage scales. The salesclerk told me that flights leaving Europe have a smaller weight restriction on luggage - basically, your checked bag must be under 50 lbs. (which I knew) on the flight from the US to Europe, but on the return from Europe to the US, the weight limit was lower, 40 pounds. I did not see anything on the American Airlines website about this and it does sound doubtful, but I thought it best to check and see if this might be true? It would be very hard to come home with less than I arrive with!

I know that the budget airlines have smaller weight allowances than the majors, and that the intra-European flights often have lighter allowances as well.
This is a situation where our opinions are just that, and you should request the information from AA to be sure.

JennG: Going by the link to the AA baggage restrictions, it doesn%26#39;t appear to be the case, but you would be wise to print it out and take it with you, just in case you need to convince an over-anxious check-in or gate agent.

Bonne route!
