I%26#39;m starting to plan our stay in Lyon and as usually happens browsing around I understand there are lots of lovely things to see but we%26#39;ve got very little time: a few hours the day we arrive and the day after.
We don%26#39;t mind walking but we%26#39;re no longer youngsters ( 60yrs old )so we%26#39;ll use pubblic transport.
Our hotel is near Bellecour. Do you think we%26#39;ll manage going up to Fourviere and then to Vieux Lyon in the morning and then Croix Rousse and Presqu%26#39;ile in the afternoon obviously cutting out museums or is it really too much?
Any suggestion is welcome!!!
I%26#39;ve read about Taboules and I wouldn%26#39;t like to miss them.
Where does the funiculaire to Fourviere start from?
What%26#39;s the Ficelle?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Yes this is doable within one day. The funiculaire up to Fourvière starts at Saint Jean, it is a 10 to 15 minutes nice walk from your hotel. Walk down the stairs, head to Saint-Jean area and to Saint Paul. Cross the Saône river and you will arrive place des Terreaux.
You may enjoy a lunch at the Musée Saint Pierre café (place des Terreaux). I suggest that you take the funiculaire up to the Croix-Rousse hill too (at métro stop Hotel de Ville) to save your energy, but walk down the hill through the traboules (go to the tourist office right on Place Bellecour and ask for a map of the traboules).
The %26quot;ficelle%26quot; is the nickname of the funiculaire.
I strongly suggest that you look at a city map to figure out distances and itineraries; use mappy.fr or this one : http://www.carto.lyon.fr/plan/

Thanks for your helpful suggestions!
I%26#39;ll stamp your reply and take it with me so we won%26#39;t have to waste our precious time on deciding which way to go!
One more question: today we have received our TGV tickets. Do we have to oliterate them as we do in Italy, before getting on the train?
Thanks again.
|||
Yes, you have to validate your ticket before getting into the train. If not you%26#39;re likely to be fined. Just watch how the other people do it and follow their example.

Bon jour!
The taboules are well hidden %26#39;passages%26#39; in old historic Lyon that lead from one street to the other. There are dozens and dozens of them. Some have brass plaques marking them.
Definitely take the furniculaire to the Fouvriere. You can get there easily by Metro from Bellecour. The views of Lyon from the church are breathtaking. The metro is ultra modern and easy to use and so is the modern tramway. Get a 1 day Liberte ticket from any tramway or metro station for about 4 Euro.
When at Fouvriere you may wish to take the furniculaire to the Roman amphitheatre but being from Italy this may not be of interest.
The shopping on Avenue de la Republique is smart and your hotel at Bellecour is right in the heart of it.
Modern shopping mall at Gare Part Dieu tramway and metro station is nearby. Has a Galleries Lafayette and 100s of shops.
The pastries and baguette sandwiches at Brioche Doree cafes across France are excellent! Lyon is paradise. A day trip to Grenoble is nice. There are 12 post secondary institutions in Lyon so the city has a lively young feel. Have fun! We just got back and loved it.

Yes you have to %26#39;validate%26#39; or %26#39;composter%26#39;(French) your TGV tickets at the rail stations in France. Look for little yellow %26#39;composter%26#39; machines all over the stations. It time stamps your ticket.
Saluti!

More info for me to print!!
Thanks Ozeeboy
I%26#39;m afraid we won%26#39;t have time to fit in a trip to Grenoble as we have already planned to continue on to Paris. Maybe next time.
Bye!
