la salette

We are a family 2adults and 4children ages2,5,7,and8. Sounds crazy but we have planned a trip to lourdes and then we have three days to explore before heading back towards biarritz for our departure. How far is Lyon is this a nice trip?... and is the shrine of Our lady of La salette near there? It is not necessary to have planned amusements for children. Hiking and fresh air activity is what we are looking for....... within reason as they are young.

Lyon is definitively not the same region : it is farther than getting from Galway to Cork! Here is a very useful website to check distances and itineraries. You will get everything you need : ditances, map, driving time, cost and detailed itineraries.

Sorry, don%26#39;t know anything about ND de La Salette or Lourdes...You%26#39;re on the Lyon forum actually.

Assuming you%26#39;ll have some transport and are looking for other religious destinations to visit, you could have a look at Albi where the plain exterior of the cathedral hides some stunning interior decoration www.albi-tourisme.fr/us/pagesEditos.asp… and then further north is Conques http://www.conques.com/index1.htm which was on the medieval pilgrimage routes to Compostella.

The viamichelin website will give the distances to check whether it will be feasible with a car load of children!

If you just want fresh air and walking, then there is superb scenery very close to Lourdes. Highlights for us were the Cirque de Gavarnie and the Pont d%26#39;Espagne/Lac de Gaube - and the drive over the Tourmalet with a trip on the cablecar to the Pic du Midi. There is some really good info on this site, especially if you also have a look at %26#39;The prestigious sites%26#39; as well: lourdes-infotourisme.com/uk/…default.asp

When in Lourdes take the small tourist train from just in front of the grotto, you can get off at the funiclair on the outskirts of town, then it will take you up the mountain for breath taking views of the pyrenees, can do loads of hiking and fresh air from there, can take the tourist train back to town.

Area of Biarritz is also good, Bayeux city also good, if no car good bus connections from biarritz.

If you have a car you can travel to Toulouse in about 4 hrs from Lourdes - nice drive even on the motorway, have done the drive from Lourdes to perpignan 6 hrs - is nice, drive to Lyon is out.Nearest airport to La Salette id Ryanair to Grenoble or aer lingus to Lyon.

Some good towns along pyrenees - Foix is good - about 3.5 hrs drive
