Best Coastal Base to explore Provence

We would like to take a week or two to explore parts of Provence, especially the Luberon, Vaucluse, Aix etc. However we would like a base that is on the coast with good beaches nearby. Then we would take daytrips to the aforementioned areas. We are thinking that Cassis would be our best option for a base, but are open to other areas. A good supply of self-catering options is essential.

Wanting to combine %26quot;good beaches%26quot; with the Luberon is, in my opinion, an oil and water combination for vacation. Yes, you could stay in Cassis or even Sts. Maries de la Mer but you%26#39;ll spend hours on your daily commute exploring Provence.

There are many wonderful places to base yourself for a number of days while visiting the Vaucluse, both in cities like Avignon, Arles, or Aix-en-Provence as well as charming B%26amp;Bs in St. Remy and quite literally over the entire region. While I am the first to find a location and settle in as long as possible, why not split your time, a enchanting cottage stay in Provence followed by a time on the coast?

I agree with the last post.

Find a nice Gite in the Luberon/Alpilles area to explore the area and use that for occassional day trips to the coast - especially the wonderful Camargue beaches.

It%26#39;s amazing how Tripadvisor can help. I am taking note of the advice of the previous two posters, but all the while feeling restricted by the fact that most self catering options only rent by the week Saturday to Saturday. Then another post catches my eye and I follow the links through to a %26quot;self catering Bed and Breakfast%26quot; called Mas du Clos de l%26#39;Escarrat in Jonquieres and it is just exactly the type of location we would love (sans the ocean of course), so we could stay here for a few days and then have our three days or so in a small hotel in Cassis. Of course I%26#39;ll explore other options, but this could be perfect.
