Do French restaurant have wine by the glass?
Do French restaurant have a house wine?
And how do you order it in French? I have try various translation services but the French words don%26#39;t seem correct.

You can order wine by the glass. House wine (white or red) usually comes in a pichet (a sort of small jug that may be glass or china) and this is the best option from a price point of view. Pichets come in 25cl (enough for two small glasses), 50cl and sometimes 100cl. I find a strange consistency in prices in cheap to middle range restaurants, with 25cl pichets usually 5 euro and 50cl 9 euro.
If there should be language difficulties just point to the item you%26#39;re referring to on the menu, but you%26#39;ll be surprised how easy it is to make yourself understood.

Some Restaurants have a house wine but it comes in a bottle instead of a carafe. They purchase a lot of cases of a particular wine and vintage and serve it as their house wine so that it is generally cheaper, and just as good, as selecting a particular wine from the list. The Brasserie D%26#39;Ile St Louis serves a good house red wine in a bottle.
BTW wine served in a bottle should be presented to you unopenned so that you can look at and verify the label. It should then be openned at your table and you should be offered a taste. If it is acceptable both glasses should then be filled. If an openned bottle of wine is brought to your table, send it back. This still happens once in a while.

The cheapest option is to order the house wine by the pichet - %26quot;un quart pichet de rouge%26quot; or %26quot;un demi pichet de rosé%26quot; or %26quot;un demi pichet de blanc%26quot; will get you a very drinkable wine at very good value.
Santé!

Hi --
Since no restaurant in France would ever survive with a bad house wine, always feel confident ordering it. Whether red or white or rose, it will always be more than drinkable.
You shouldn%26#39;t have any trouble ordering a small amount of wine in a French place. Many people do it.
I usually order, %26quot;Je voudrais un quart pichet de vin rouge%26quot;. I know the word vin isn%26#39;t necessary, but I just like the sound of the phrase %26quot;vin rouge%26quot;, so I say it.
Bon voyage.
